There are two basic stances in skateboarding: goofy and regular.
You can divide skaters into either Regular or Goofy. You are either a goofy or a regular stance skater. Regular is more common than goofy.
Goofy is for skaters that normally have their right foot leading.
Regular is for skaters that normally have their left foot leading.
“Normally” since if temporary changing leading foot, then you are riding switch.
One way to find out which stance you would probably feel most comfortable with is is to ask someone to push you from behind and see which foot you automatically take forward to stop you from falling.
You can also ride fakie, which is riding in your normal stance (not switch), but you have the tail of your board in front.
